Cover!!

Hey heartbeat group members I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on how the cover image relates to Max and Ali, I'm going to give my thoughts then comment below what yours are! I was thinking mainly about the difference between the condition of the apple because I realize that the reason Max and Ali have some GREAT things in common but then things that they can disagree on for hours on end. So if they are so different in some ways, I think that these apples are a way of representing this!

  1. i think that it relates to the ability to be free but not taking that chance and also represents restlesness and how she is restless. i also think that she decides to rebel against drawing the apple and draws it shriveled and aten. this relates to max and ali because they are the same apple, but the two apples are different! (i just realized that) also since max wants to get out of the small ton, his is eaten and rotting because he is restless but alis is full because she feels free where she is, she is not restless to get out of the town.(sorry for the extremely long comment)

  3. I now think that the apple could represent friendship, because as you said, Max and Annie have great things in common, but maybe in the end of the book, something could happen that splits their friendship, and finishes the apple, now rotten. An example could be that Max actually establishes a camp for "boys like him", and they could never see each other again. Also, I just realized the the simplicity of the apple, so if Annie had to draw it 100 times, it might be a resemblance to all her problems. if Annie drew it 100 times, she must get bored with it at one point, as Helen said, and be against being chained to "drawing all the apples", which could cause the problems and rotten the apple.

  4. Helen it was an over statement I know but I was just trying to get
The point across. Steven I think that's great but I want to know more about how this cover relates to max and annie and their *conflicts*

  6. I actually think that more characters will come throughout the story, and the problems will not just be between Max and Annie. I think this because Annie has a very strong personality, and I think that just Max can't wear her down. For example, a baby "pumpkin alien" is already being introduced to the storyline, and they might have conflicts, too.

P.S. You spelt my name wrong, just to let you know.

  8. I agree with you stephen. I think that the apple might represent there realationship. Also like you said Max was talking about creating an all boys camp for boys like him but annie is a girl. If MAx said that and it happens later on in the book then the rotton apple on the back could resemble how their realationship changes from the begining of the book to the end.

  9. I also noticed that in the book the grandpa stopped running for some reason he would not tell. There was also some pictures of him when he was young about how he ran and he had a trophy in his hands but he was not smiling for some reason we don't know. He also stopped running when he was when he was fifteen and he won the nationals. Then he stopped running but he won't say why. I think that the reason he stopped running is Annie would always talk about how running makes her feel free. If he was in races and competting he may not feel free and happy. That is mabye why he stopped. I noticed on page 48 they are disscusing what they are saving up for. Max says "running shoes and he tells me he has to have them for the track meets in the spring because the coach won't let him run barefoot and he has to get them in time to break them in and he hopes they work because he has to win the meets and then in italics it says he has to. If he has to win the meets then he might lose that feel of freedom when he is running. From that he might end up like Annies Grandpa.

  10. Hey Zoe,

I love the comment and really enjoyed how you analyzed the features of the text as well - the use of italics to show us further details and emphasis. I think it is interesting the Max and Annie seem to be going on different paths. Annie running for the love of the feeling and Max for the competitive part. How do you think this will change their relationship? I think this somehow connects back to her grandfather and his past experience with running.

Really Well Done - very thoughtful! Excellent work group

  13. hey zoe just thought i would mention hi. HI...
So Zoe what do you think of how Annie runs and why. I think it's because she loves the feelings of nature i know this because on page 1 she mentions "KNOWING I COULD FLY< TOUCH THE EARTH ATLEAST FOR NOW." i think this is representing that she wants to spend all of her time with the nature around her instead of sticking her face infront of the T.V for hours.(i know i would)She also mentions on page 13 "we always run barefoot, Max and i because we like the feel of the ground beneath us." I think this quote really represents that Annie loves to run with nature around her not caring how, when or why. (she doesn't like to follow the crowd.)

  16. Hi guys! I agree with you that the quote "touch the earth at least for now." is a really powerful, but what does it mean? I was talking to Mr.Bowen today ( oct,19,2010 ) and I told him about how I thought that Max was an imaginary character/friend Annie had made up after reading this quote in annie's perspective " sometimes when I am running a boy appears, he emerges from the trees like my sideways shadow." later in the book I realized that Max was real but it was still an interesting thought.I also like that Annie's mom thought that she was always running and was restless in her sleep even and was " running through her sleep and dreams.". I found that ALMOST as powerful as the quote on pg. 1, almost but the quote on pg. 1 was more powerful. The fact that Annie runs bare foot and gives the impression that she is running all the time makes her passion for running bigger, also I think that Annie is running to be herself.Sorry for giving away some of the plot in my last comment, I should have let you figure it out yourselves, I deleted the comment though and I will use it for next weeks conversation. Bye

  17. Hi Andre, on pages 60-62 the setting and plot of the book are in Annie's art class. There the author discribes what the apple on the cover represented, so the teacher in the scene asked the class to draw the same apple 100 times. Why do you think Annie's classmate Kaylee acted bored with better things to do, and repeat the same thing the teacher said over and over again? I think this is beacuse Kaylle seems to be one of the girls that are a bit abnoxous and inconsiderate she seems to be showing no respect to the teacher and acting like she (the teacher) has no taste, but i think that i art everything you do is considered art of fun. Annie on the other hand is probably more quiet, apprishiated and interested because an apple is a fruit that grows on tree that are planted outside and this one apple may remind her of how she loves to run. There fore it looks as if Annie is interested in the assinment and the teacher will start apprishiating her more. I can connect to this because yesterday when we were having gym a few students wern't acsepting Mr.Bowen's idea's of what to do and starting taking over and suggesting to many idea's. And not dure if any of you know this but if you ask any students in strings they may agree that every class there is just like our french class.

  18. Well I agree with stephen becaus e I think that the apple represnts Ali's relationships with all of the characters because as the book goes on she might change and that will effect her relationships. While I was thinking about this I also realized that everytime Ali is drawing her apple she change it by putting a dent or bruise in the side.

  19. is it ok if I have already read to page 85?

  20. I think that I would also kind of get lazy if mr.bowen asked us to draw an apple one hundred times. I think I would kind of do a quick job with it. I think that Annie really likes to take her time. I think that this is an important part of the book because on the front their is a picture of an apple and on the back there is a rotton apple. I think that somewhere in there, there might be some sort of connection bettween the two.

  21. Hey All,

Wow, some more powerful observations. I really liked Callia's idea about Max being an imaginary friend. It made me think why would a character such as Annie want an imaginary character? What would it say about the other people in her life? What would motivate her to create an imaginary friend?

Daniel/Zoe - I like the idea of talking about how each time Annie draws the apple she is actually impacting and changing the object she is drawing. By either bruising the apple or allowing her attitude towards the project to change it. It is almost like she is changing the art project drawing and by touching it. Somehow it would be representing her emotions. A very powerful image. Why would it be interesting for someone to be interacting with an art project they are making?

  22. yes daniel it's okay. Ha see what i did there IT'S! bye

  23. I think that Annie would make up an imaginary friend because she is lonely. I think she's lonely because she doesn't follow the crowd due to running, and everyone learned to just accept it and ignore Annie. On page 14, an example is, "Some people think we are a little bit crazy runnng barefoot through rain and mud and snow but it doesn't feel crazy to us. (us = Max and Annie)" Without Max, the book would just say, "Some people think I am a little bit crazy," and "It doen't feel crazy to me," and in past experience, I know it is easier to go through something with a friend, which is why there could've been the possibility Max was imaginary.

Whew, this book really makes me think!
